Magazines pt2

1. Early Magazine Covers
These magazines were close to books. Many of the magazines had no covers, though there could be a small picture on the front. There was no really explanation on what to expect inside. These covers were really bland. Later on, The covers began to add more visuals and shows what you would be looking at. They were not very specific on what you were going to read, its just seemed like a brief overview of the sections.

2. The Poster Cover

The photos began adding art to the covers, becoming more interesting. They told the reader what they would be reading inside. They were descriptive because of the image on the front. In 1936, LIFE added a strong black and white photo to their cover; Other magazines soon started following what LIFE has done.

3. Pictures Married to Type

These magazines seemed to have a specific theme to them. There were usually models in an unusual position overlapping the large title on the cover. The details of the magazine were to the sides of the subject, showing what the magazine is to be expected of. I noticed that there seemed to be more woman on the covers and how they seemed to be boxed in with information over time.

4. In the Forest of Words

These magazines seem to be more into our culture and they try to show us how to "benefit" our lives. They seem to have more dramatic covers and it seems to pull us into what we want to see rather than the real events going around.

Fashion

1. In the first video, her neck was elongated and thinned; Her eyes became larger along with being moved up as well.
2. In the second video, her skin was whitened and thinned, her body was made longer, and her face was touched up.
3. In the third video, her body was dramatically thinned to a point (in my opinion) to where it didn't look natural. Her cellulite was removed, hair was made longer, and her face seemed to change along with everything else.
4. I don't think so because thats putting up someone who isn't them, they begin advertising a different model who doesn't exist.
5. Women seem to not notice because the repetition of how beautiful the models look in the magazines seem very consistent, thus putting on a beauty standard that isn't possible without photo manipulation. Now causing woman to feel out of place when they don't look like how the models do.
6. I am sure if a couple of blemishes were removed, it wouldn't be a big deal. Though drastically changing an overweight woman to a very thin being doesn't seem acceptable
7. Journalism is only for real life events and documenting them to show the world. Fashion is more for enjoyment.
8. We expect women o look this way because of some of the things that the magazines say like:
"BECOME MORE BEAUTIFUL WITH THIS SIMPLE TRICK"
'HOW TO LOSE WEIGHT FAST"
"BEST JEANS FOR YOUR BODY"
"375 WAYS TO TOTALLY LOOK HOT THIS FALL"
9. To show us how manipulated most magazines can be and to show how the women in the photos are not portrayed truthfully
10. Women seem to have a more unrealistic standard on them. It becomes a sexist problem that women are needed to look a certain way. Men have a more realistic standard that could be achieved with effort, though women cannot enlarge their eyes, thin their necks, and magically erase all fat on their bodies. Both genders can try to be "magazine beautiful", but it is an unreal standard.

My Favorite Cover

W-Mag-12.13.COVER_.jpg

"For W’s December/January Art Issue, the magazine collaborated with artist Yayoi Kusama to create this iconic cover image depicting George Clooney. The visually arresting image is the highlight of the cover story, for which five leading female artists were invited to create interpretive portraits of the actor. Clooney wears a suit painted by Kusama with her signature polka dots and stands against a polka-dotted backdrop. Planned to coincide with the opening of an exhibition of new work by Kusama at David Zwirner Gallery, the cover makes a powerful reference to the artist’s iconic self-portraits."

This cover of George Clooney really shows Yayoi Kusama's art style in a sophisticated fashion. The photo is detailed with patterns, making it more interesting to look at. I feel that the portrait was really giving off a happy vibe and was portraying a fun environment to be in. George Clooney was a wonderful pick for this project because he seems to be a "serious character" in an amusing ambiance.

Magazine Tips

Our magazine covers should be creative and unique. We want to draw the audience to our work, not bore them. Along with being artistic, the brand of the magazine should be consistent. This shows the reader what they are reading so they do not buy an issue they are not interested in. To pull them in even deeper, the content should be hinted on the cover to show the reader what this particular magazine has to offer. The picture will bring out curiosity while the details will give the reader the interesting stories and reviews.

Ian Fisher

I feel that the first photo is really powerful because it is an incredibly hard to make.

Set at Home- #1-#4
Set at Training- #5-#13
Set at Iraq- #14- #27
Photo #28 is at Home

Being in Iraq because being in a dangerous place like so is happening. Everything he has trained for has finally happened.
It shows his story and gives great emotion. You feel as if you could understand what he is going through.

PART 1

The captions are in past tense
They give us more information and emotion to understand.

PART 2

Ian went through many heartbreaks and emotional moments through out being in Iraq. He created lifelong friends along the way as well. Because of these created emotions, he started doing drugs and drinking alcohol to soothe the mental pain and anger he was enduring though out his deployment. Abandoned Theme Parks

The Prehistoric Forest, Irish Hills, Michigan! This park is full of fiberglass dinosaurs scattered through a forrest. I would love to go see the art work and maybe take make one for myself! It would give off a nice, natural feeling to the photos. Plus, who doesn't love dinosaurs

I would love to go see some abandoned asylums, circuses, or prisons. Places that once used to be cities or small towns could make interesting subjects. Islands that don't seem to be well known could also give the same effect.

Isla de las Munecas - The Island of the Dolls

It would be amazing to see such a creepy site! Hearing the legend and touring the island could be a great story to show. Maybe spending the night and documenting what happens as well? I could venture deeper into the island and see if there is some unknown dolls round and about.

I would bring my camera equipment along with a doll to hang. I would ask around and learn about Mexico's culture. I could document my visit to Mexico as well as this charmed island.

Africa Photos

I think it is very interesting and brave that Nick Brandt does this. I bet it is an amazing experience working around these animals while blending his passion for photography along with it.

This photo shows two lions (female on left, male on right) with each other. I think the photo is beautiful because of the colors and animals in it.
The lions seem to fill the frame well, there also seems to be balance in the photo.
He uses a Pentax 67ii with two fixed lenses, thus creating a dramatic landscape.
He sees how these species are become more and more endangered everyday. Brandt wants to show us what we are going to be missing.

"There is something profoundly iconic, mythological even, about the animals of East and southern Africa." -Nick Brandt

Famous Black & White Photographers PART 3

1. I feel that these photos are very interesting because they show what common people look like in the city. They are just interesting photos to look at, the different personalities of people in the photos make them very enjoyable.

2. The last two photos I posted (on part two):

I see happiness and love. The way he spins her around shows the affection burning brightly. Her laughter can lighten up the room.

I smell the ocean breeze, and the smell of faint perfume.

I hear the cars zoom by on the slick streets. The conversations of citizens fill my ears as they pass.

I taste the salty ocean water and the sweet dessert. Each one are so drastically different, though they give me the same feeling.

I feel the melting ice cream on my fingertips and the water seeping through the fabric. Both are so cold, though the feelings of care take over such uncomfortable feelings.

3. A poster would be wonderful.

Mural at Bowie!!

1. We should just have what anyone thinks is interesting at Bowie! If someone is wearing a fun fiesta outfit and they get a nice picture of it, we could put it on the mural! Maybe if someone takes a beautiful photo of the flowers on campus, we could post that too!

2. I feel that we could use any way to get photos. The more the better!

3. I wouldn't mind where the mural was, anyplace where it could be seen would be amazing!

Funny Elderly Captions

Marcia Addams is spotted at her granddaughters 7th birthday party wearing a plastic princess crown. The birthday girl, Sarah Addams, placed the headwear on her grandmothers head while she finished eating a piece of chocolate cake. "I felt beautiful in my crown." Addams said.

94 year old Mark Leander orders a cheeseburger at the neighborhood's nearest Wendy's. He ran through many red lights while he was on his way to fulfill his hunger. "What can I say, I gotta have my mid-day burger." Leander said.

Linda Grace, a hometown favorite, wears a hilarious shirt to the local supermarket. She bought the shirt at a thrift shop in Atlanta, Georgia. "I heard many people laughing as I passed them. It was really enjoyable." Grace said.

Unusual and Interesting Photos

A. I think his work was amazing! It was very different and fun!
B. I assume he took three different photos from different angles and overlaid them to create these interesting photos.
C. The Frost Bank Tower in Austin, Texas would look very beautiful.

Shutter Speed

Slow:

High:

1. 1/30 or 1/60
2. 1/30 or 1/60
3. 1/1000
4. 1/800
5. 1/60
6. 1/1000

2. 1/30
3. 1/1000
4. 1/500
5. 1/30
6. 1/500

You may use Auto along with Manual, Shutter Priority, and Aperture Priority. Auto is your camera doing all the work for you! Manual is where you set your shutter speed and aperture yourself. Aperture Priority sets the shutter speed for you, though you manually fix the aperture. Last, Shutter Priority is the opposite of Aperture Priority.

Academic Photo Reflection

1. I wanted to try to get the best photo as I could without standing in an abnormal place in the classroom.
2. I tried to keep my photos level. I kept kneeling down to make it seem like I was eye level with the subject.
3. I would try to make my photos more interesting.
4. I would use the same subjects.
5. Rule of Thirds or Simplicity
6. Framing
7. Balance is what I struggle on. Looking at Balance photos may help my confusion.

http://lcphotoj.blogspot.com

I think the photos have amazing potential! Most subjects can be seen in the photos as well. I do think if the photos were not blurry and some faces could be seen better, the photos would look perfect!

Academic Photos

A:

B:

C:

I tried to accomplish Rule of Thirds on all three of my photos, though on picture A and B I feel like I accomplished Simplicity.
Picture A: The subject is the girl drawing in the hallway. I believe the subject is clear.
Picture B: The subject is the boy in math class focusing on what Mrs. Dobrenel is teaching. I believe the subject is clear.
Picture C: The two boys in math are my subjects. I feel I could have moved in front of their desks to have them more focused, though I would have lost Rule of Thirds.

Aperture

Aperture is like our eyes!!
The smaller the f-stop, the larger aperture
The larger the f-stop, the smaller the aperture
Aperture creates Depth of Field by blurring the background and putting the subject in focus, thus creating a more interesting photo!

2012 Jostens Photo Contest

My favorite photo is one of two boys hugging excitedly as the crowd cheers behind them. Rule of Thirds is prominent and the colors in this photo are very bright and beautiful.

THE STORY

Everyone seems to be praying about an unknown conflict. it shows nice emotion. (Though I don't like how the white balance is such a yellow color)

ACTION/EMOTION

They are having a good time and messing around with each other.

FILLING THE FRAME

The frame is filled because of the two subjects, along with the darkness surrounding them.

Doctored Photo

I believe that manipulating the photo is not the correct way of journaling because it is false and not truthful. Why pretend its the truth and mislead your audience? How is lying to your readers going to benefit the story correctly? Making a man more dark skinned or adding another missile to a photo going to make it so extreme of a story until everyone finds out its fake is not the way Id like to go about my stories.

The bottom photo was altered to take out the females in the cabinet. These woman worked their way to be there any you are taking them out? It is very unethical and dishonest. Why can't we show the woman? Does their gender offend anyone? It shouldn't if it does. They are humans to and are as smart as the men in that cabinet as well.

Famous Black and White Photographers PART 2

Garry Winogrand was a photographer from the Bronx in New York. He took photos on the streets that reminded him of "The American Lifestyle" in the mid 20th century. He photographed everyday woman on the street, famous actors, hippies, animals, and many other subjects.
Garry was born on January 14, 1928 in New York, New York and died on March 19, 1984 in Tijuana, Mexico. Winogrand's education was splitted between The New School and Columbia University.
